HH Dalai Lama Monastery

 

The Tibetan Monastery at a picturesque location at Mcleodganj (upper Dharamshala) is the resident of His Holiness Dalai Lama.   It consists of HH Residence, Museum and hostel for the students.   This is a very peaceful Buddhist temple and the structure and location of the monastery in the middle of the Tibetan Settlement gives the feel of Lhasa.  The beauty, calmness, cleanliness of the place is good enough to make you feel the inner peace of the soul, body and mind.  This monastery is very much known for meditation. 

 

History

When HH fled from the Tibet, the prime Minister of India allowed him to entry the country and stay in the region.  HH Dalai Lama and his followers settled at Mcleodganj and build resident of HH Dalai Lama.   These day there are many large statues of Budha, Ayaloktwshwara, Pamasambhaya and others. 

 

People come here across the word to do meditation and to get blessing from HH Dalai Lama.    There are shops inside the Monastery which sell ritual item and books.   People come here for sightseeing, mediations and rituals.  They prayer and chant with prayer wheels. 

 

Best time

 

This temple is remains open throughout the day for people of all religions and creeds.  The best time to visit is from September to June.  The winter starts in October and ends by mid of March.

 

Monsoon starts in July and ends in by August.  This place is second heights for rain which makes is difficult to visit this area during these months.

Enjoying Dalai Lama’s preaching

Dalai Lama visits the temple at specific dates. If you are visiting during one of those days, you need to purchase a ticket to watch the teaching. You can listen to it either directly or through a radio. He speaks in Tibetan language. You need an English speaking Tibetan translator to help you understand.

Meditation

Here inside the temple as long as you desire. People meditating with prayer beads. You can purchase those from the stalls inside the complex. You can always speak with the lamas inside the temple to learn about meditation.

Turning prayer wheels

Prayer wheels are rotating cylindrical wheels with Tibetan prayer mantras inscribed on it. As people walk around the temple, they push the wheels to rotate it. It is a part of the rituals of this temple.

Library

There is a large library inside the temple. Tourists can read from the collections in the reading area. Very few books have English translation in this collection.

Museum

Within the temple complex, you can find a small museum. It holds rare photograms of Dalai Lama, Tibetan culture, martyrs and others. This museum is found near the entry gate. There are also pictures of how Dalai Lama escaped from Tibet. A short video about the culture is played in the museum.
