According, to Hindu Mythology when Goddess Sati sacrificed herself in the honour of Lord Shiva in her Fathers Yagya.  Lord Shiva took her body on his shoulder and started Tandav.  Lord Shiva divided the body of Sati in 51 parts to stop her destroying herself. Her body parts are fell at different spots and make all of them A Shakti Peeth.  One part of the breast of Sai fell at one spot, making that a Shakti Peeth and we all know that by name of  Kangra and Temple is known by Brijeshwari temple. The original Temple was built by Pandavas at the time Mahabharta.  One of Pandavas saw Goddess Durga in their dream in which she told them that she is situated in the Nagarkot village and if they want them self to be secure they should make a temple for her in that area to save themselves. That same night they made a magnificent temple for her in the Nagarkot village.

Later King Susharma has rebuilt the temple   and Maharaja Ranjeet Singh has dedicated a Golden Umbrella over there. In the past this temple contains tonnes of gold and many ghanta made of pure silver.   This temple was looted a number of time the invaders.  Specially Md Gaznavi has looted this place for at least 5 times.   This place was destroyed by the powerful earthquake also in 1905. The complete area of Nagarkot (known as kangra these days) and this temple was destroyed badly.   But keeping in view the pilgrims of Hindus is was rebuilt by Government in the same structure.
